IUCAA Ph.D. Programme

Eligibility:

The academic year at IUCAA begins in August every year. Students, who expect to complete their M.Sc. (in Physics / Electronics / Astronomy / Applied Mathematics) or B.E. / B.Tech. / M.E. / M.Tech. degree (any branch) by August are eligible to apply. In addition, talented final year B.Sc., 1st year M.Sc. (in Physics / Electronics / Astronomy / Applied Mathematics) and 2nd / 3rd year B.E. / B.Tech. (any branch) students can also apply to be PRE-SELECTED for research scholarship (to do Ph.D.) at IUCAA.

We are looking for highly motivated students with consistently good academic record. Students who have already completed the above degrees can also apply. Selection to research scholarship is through a written test and interviews.

There is no M.Sc. or B.Sc. programme at IUCAA. However, the University of Pune does offer optional courses in astronomy and astrophysics under their M.Sc. programme in physics. These courses are often taught by IUCAA faculty.

How to apply:

JEST – This is a national level written test jointly conducted by 22 participating institutes. JEST is usually held in February every year at various locations in the country. Applications are to be submitted online. Students performing satisfactorily in the written test are invited by participating institutes to one or more oral interviews. Students performing satisfactorily are offered admission to the Ph.D. Programme. Details are posted and updated on the websites of all the participating institutes every year.

INAT – The IUCAA-NCRA Admission Test (INAT) is conducted to select candidates for research scholarship (to join Ph.D. Programme) either at Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, or National Centre for Radio Astrophysics of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (NCRA – TIFR), Pune. INAT is usually held in December every year. As in JEST, this procedure too involves a written test and oral interviews. Applications are to be submitted online. Details are posted and updated on the websites of IUCAA and NCRA every year.
